IPL uses Intense Pulsed Light technology to deliver rapid pulses of broad-spectrum light energy into the skin. You’ll need to avoid sun exposure for 2-3 weeks before treatment, discontinue retinol products 5 days prior, and avoid self-tanning products in the weeks leading up to your appointment. We’ll review all pre-care instructions and answer any questions to ensure you’re prepared.
On treatment day, your skin will be thoroughly cleansed and a cooling gel may be applied. Your provider will use the IPL device to deliver controlled pulses of light across the treatment area. You may feel a warm, snapping sensation as the light is applied, but most patients find the treatment tolerable. Protective eyewear is worn throughout the procedure. Most IPL sessions take about 1 hour. Immediately after treatment, you may notice darkening of pigmented spots or mild redness, which is normal and expected.
Some results are visible immediately, including reduction of redness. Brown spots and sun damage will initially darken over the first few days before flaking off and fading within 1-2 weeks.
