How Sclerotherapy Works
Sclerotherapy is the gold standard treatment for spider veins. During the procedure, a specially formulated sclerosing solution is injected directly into the affected veins using a very fine needle. This solution acts as an irritant to the vessel walls, causing an inflammatory response that makes the walls stick together and seal shut. The collapsed vein is then isolated from blood flow and begins to break down.
Over the following weeks, your body’s natural healing process takes over. The treated vein is gradually reabsorbed by the body, much like it would absorb a bruise, and the vein fades from view. During your sclerotherapy session, your provider uses a very fine needle to inject the sclerosing solution directly into the spider veins. Many patients don’t even feel the injections due to the small needle size. Unlike some vein treatments, the solution doesn’t burn, making the procedure comfortable and well-tolerated. Each session takes approximately 30 minutes, depending on the number and size of veins being treated. After treatment, compression stockings are typically worn for several days to minimize bruising and support the healing process.

How many sclerotherapy treatments will I need?

Is sclerotherapy painful?

What are the side effects of sclerotherapy?
